As part of our opening circle, I’ll be offering a light ceremonial cacao drink to help us settle in and connect gently with the retreat energy.
This is entirely optional, and designed as a heart-opening, grounding experience—not a full-blown ceremonial journey. We’re working with 25g of ceremonial grade cacao per person, about half the typical dose used in a deep ceremony.
What is Ceremonial Cacao?
Ceremonial cacao is 100% pure cacao paste, made from fermented and roasted cacao beans. It’s minimally processed and retains its full array of naturally occurring compounds. It’s used in a heartfelt and intentional way, often as part of personal or group ritual.
This isn’t hot chocolate, and it’s not psychedelic—but cacao is an entheogen, meaning it can help us connect more deeply to ourselves, others, and the moment.
We’ll be using ceremonial cacao from Forever Cacao, a small-batch, ethically sourced, high-grade cacao from Peru.
Many of the facts shared here come from the brilliant resource hub at Keith’s Cacao, where you can learn more about the deeper medicinal and spiritual qualities of this plant.
Why are we using cacao in this way?
Cacao has been part of my personal practice since 2013—the year I first offered Mandala Magic! I’ve spent time training as a ceremonial cacao guide and working closely with this plant in medicine dietas and creative ritual.
By opening our retreat with cacao, we’re:
Creating a gentle energetic container
Inviting heart-based awareness
Tapping into the wisdom of the body
Grounding ourselves in intention and presence
What should I expect?
Every person’s experience is different, but here are some common effects:
A sustained boost of energy and mental clarity (without the crash of coffee)
A gentle sense of euphoria or calm focus
An increased connection to the heart centre
Heightened creative or meditative awareness
A possible sense of emotional release or insight
Are there any contraindications?
Although we’re using a small and gentle dose, cacao is a bioactive plant—so it’s important to be mindful.
Please read carefully and consult a healthcare professional if unsure:
Antidepressants (SSRIs/MAOIs)
Cacao contains MAOIs which can interact negatively with certain antidepressants or anti-psychotic medications. If you are on such medication, please check with your doctor.
Heart Rate
Cacao can raise your heart rate slightly. If you have a heart condition, consult your doctor before consuming.
Blood Pressure
Cacao is known to regulate blood pressure, but again, speak with your doctor if you’re on medication.
Caffeine Sensitivity
Cacao contains a small amount of caffeine (similar to decaf coffee) and higher levels of theobromine, which can be stimulating. If you’re sensitive to stimulants, please consider your needs.
Other Substances
Cacao increases blood flow to the brain—meaning anything else in your system may be amplified (including alcohol, supplements, etc). Plan accordingly.
What does it taste like?
Ceremonial cacao is 100% pure and unsweetened, so it’s naturally bitter and rich. Don’t expect a sugary hot chocolate!
We’ll be preparing it gently with:
Rose and Lucuma for a delicate rose and butterscotch flavour with a touch of natural honey to sweeten if required.
Do I need to fast before drinking?
No fasting required. Since we’re using a smaller amount (25g), there’s no need to come empty-stomached, but avoid snacks and dairy milk beforehand.
Cacao has been a trusted ally in my own personal and creative evolution. I’m honoured to share it with you in this simple and heartfelt way.
If you have questions or concerns before partaking, just let me know. You’re welcome to opt out at any time, and all participation is fully by choice.
